Author Interviews

In Conversation with Eleanor Vance

Eleanor Vance writes the kind of novels readers press into each other’s hands. We sat down with her to talk craft, coastlines, and the stories that haunt her.

On finding the spark

“I started with an image,” she tells us, “a lighthouse due to be torn down, and an old man refusing to let its stories go dark. Everything grew from that single stubborn light.”

On memory as material

“Memory is unreliable, and that’s exactly why it’s such rich territory for fiction. We’re all editing our own pasts.”

On advice for new writers

“Write the book only you can write. The market will always tell you what’s selling. Ignore it, and tell the truth as you see it.”
